Been looking for a place to move to in Portland lately. We'd really like to have it figured out soon, and hopefully able to be moving in early May. I will admit though that I sometimes take breaks from looking at places to rent to look at places to buy. I know it might be a ways off, but lets be honest, I'm a dreamer and I'm really good at ( Read more... )

This is Miya!

USDA has a loan specifically for low-income families looking to buy their first home. We had to jump through hoops, fill out a LOT of paperwork, take a long homeowner's class, etc. But it was SO worth it to have a home. Your mortgage depends in what you make, so we were only paying about $500 a month at first - less than rent had been before! It just went up after we submitted our taxes since Roy and I make more than we did two years ago, but again, since the mortgage depends on your income, we can afford it.

I moved around SO MUCH as a kid and I know your girls would benefit from having a place they knew was permanently theirs.

I remember when you guys were going through all that. The thing is our credit sucks and right now with Stefan's current job we are actually below the poverty line. I just keep having a feeling that we would never get approved for anything, at least not in our current situation.

Stef wanted to know if the USDA you are referring to is the US Department of Agriculture? Cause he's confused why they would care about home owning unless it had to do with farms.

Yep, it's part of their Rural Development program. They only offer the loan to families whose incomes are at 50% - 80% below the typical income of the area you want to move.

No pressure, I'm just letting you know that there's definitely hope for a home someday :)
