Немного о Passive Voice

I did & It was done - в чем принципиальная разница употребления пассивного залога, когда одну и ту же информацию можно сообщить и в активе?
Есть случаи, когда без пассивного залога никак. Например:

Сбили вьетконговцы два американских самолёта. Из обоих катапультировались лётчики. У первого парашют раскрылся, у второго - нет.
Второй подлетает и хватает за стропы парашюта первого:

- American?
- Yes, American.
- Homosexual?
-Yes, homosexual.
-Active?
-No, passive.

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry....

Голос второго затихает, удаляясь....
