Exam. On the 3rd. Oh god. I failed once, I need to pass, this is hopeless. History of Brit Lit, it'll focus on Old English but there's way too much to take in and remember. It'll be fine, right?

If you can make a timeline of the major periods and movements, and then remember a few key figures in either period (who can remind you of others) -- e.g. you remember that Joe Authorpants happened; when he happened; and one or two of your favorite (or least unfavorite) works of his, that will help immensely. But yes, you'll be fine ( ... )

Fuck Beowulf, I HATE Beowulf. I love the Prose Edda though, the Voluspa is from that. I know very little. Polysemy won't get me through all of this! My professor is being really and making up a list of things for me to focus on but he won't have it done til Mon (DON'T. HAVE. TIME.) and I have other resits to take, too. This is THE major exam and I'm floundering here, incredibly. Maybe revising in the uni on Monday will help I don't know but ohgodohgodohgod.

You're going to be just fine. Take a deep breath and remember--you can do it. Focus on what you know best and find a way to make those works fit whatever questions they ask you.

Sorry to be Devil's Advocate, but isn't this a post for your normal journal? Or put it here, but ask at least some kind of question other than "It'll be fine, right?" -- it lets more people feel compelled to help you along.

Though I'm sure you'll do fine and I know exactly how you feel.

Is there anything in particular that you're struggling to grasp that we can help you with?

I understand you're frustrated, but there's got to be a more constructive way of phrasing your question. Also, anyone else reading should feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. :)

who the hell is dionysius
"Dionysus was the god of the grape harvest, winemaking, and wine."

and what was the divine names FOR?
As far as I know, the names aren't "divine." Their construction and meanings were formed based upon the linguistics properties and meanings of their language of origin, which in the case of Dionysus is Greek. In Latin, he would have been known as Bacchus. Here's some more about linguistics and word formation.

it's something to do with the limits of human cognition
I don't understand if you're referring to the naming process or important mythological themes in general. I need more information before I start speculating.

That makes absolutely no sense to my brain, but thank you, because it may in the morning. RE human cognition, it's the limits of what humans can understand. Or something. I'm totally lost at this point.

Maybe it will be fine, and maybe it won't. But you will prepare as you never have before. Your brain will be stuffed so full of Old English that it will start pouring out of your ears. And in the end, whether you pass the test or not, entire new webs of neural connections will exist because of the efforts that you have made. The idea of all grand, difficult tests is that you will never be the same, and specifically in this case, that your world will be enlarged to include Old English literature.
