I agree! American history has always been particularly interesting to me; I think the demanding part of getting a history minor would be taking more than eighteen credits a semester in order to graduate on time. And thank you! =]

I don't contribute that much either, but I thought I'd force myself out of my comfort zone for once haha

I would do law or business as a minor--something that might get you a job after college. I did English with a Creative Writing minor, and let me tell you, it's an unbelievably hard sell now. I graduated December 2011 in the top 10% of my class and have yet to find a job in my field (or even a simple office job), so I'm stuck in retail. Now I'm trying to take a commission in the Navy because they're the only organization/place of employment that has expressed interest in the fact that I even have a college degree. Also: do internships if you can. Something that will give you job experience. That's the reason why I can't even find a job in an office: I don't have any experience working in an office. In the job market, you will be competing with people who have been laid off from their jobs who already have experience, and of course employers are going to take the experienced candidate over the inexperienced one, so it's best to get yourself as much experience as possible.

I went to a technical high school and studied in a business program for three and a half years. While it has certainly landed me a few job interviews, it's definitely a lack of experience that gets the companies to give the position to someone else. I don't understand how someone is supposed to get a job somewhere but doesn't get it because they have no prior experience if they aren't given an opportunity in the first place ( ... )

Yeah, I don't understand that, either. As bad as it is for us college kids, though, I hate to think about what's going on with high school kids that are graduating now and can't get even a lowly job in retail because they're all taken by people like us who can't get anything better because the jobs that we're supposed to get are being taken by laid-off people who have much more experience. v-v

Anyway, thanks, and I hope things work out for you, too! No one wants to be stuck in retail forever...especially considering you can't even live off the wages that they pay (especially if you work a below-minimum job that relies on tips that may or may not come, such as waitressing or delivering).

The best solution would most likely be more available jobs but I don't know how that could even get started. But hopefully things get better for everyone =/

I majored in English and minored in History and French! I went to undergrad (and grew up) in the South but now living in New England as well. I graduated in 2005. 10 years apart! I feel old :)

I used my degree! I taught English in China, then English 100 in a technical college, and finally ESL in a language school- all in a 5 year span. I work in hospital administration now; working my way up to working in faculty development. I got my Master's in Higher Ed Administration, so I got the creds, I just need the job! :)

I hope you have a wonderful summer too! Are you able to do any internships in your program? If not , seek one out!!!!! My big advice for you.

Oh, I didn't see that the person above also suggested doing an internship! Sorry about that!

I tried a French class for my foreign language requirement but it was a lot more difficult for me than taking Spanish; probably should have tried taking it in middle school instead haha I'm glad you were able to get a job with your degrees! It's been hard for a lot of people to find something decent nowadays. My grandmother's constantly telling me I could be an English teacher but I'm not very good at speaking in front of groups.

It's alright, I appreciate the advice! Internships can be quite helpful if you find the right one. I just hope I'll be able to find one when back at school.
