my political thoughts

Jan 27, 2008 13:19

three and a half years ago i posted this. And i must say that i still completely agree with myself.

As I said then "the right candidate for the job is not the safe bet. the right candidate is someone who will energize americans and make them want to vote for him. it is someone who will bring change to the white house and our country through ideas and policies, not just bring change because he is not the other guy."

That person is Obama. I agree with everything that Caroline Kennedy said in the Times today. I have never had a presidential candidate make me want to vote for them more than Obama. I have followed all of the elections in the past, but i have not really lived this highs and lows with a candidate more than Obama. Stef and I went to a rally for him on the common. Sure i agreed with things that he had to say, but he gave me freaking chills because he made me believe. As Deval Patrick said, we don't just need a change in policy, we need a change in how things are done.

In my senior year history seminar we were discussing Bill Clinton's presidency. Even though I was a supporter of Clinton, I came to the historical conclusion that the Clinton presidency will be overlooked in 50-100 years. Sure the economy was good and people were feeling good about the country, but in reality, he was just a buffer between the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the War on Terror. At that point, though, my historical thoughts about him didn't stop my love for him.

Now, though, with how he has come out attacking Obama, comparing him to Jackson, marginalizing him because of his race, makes me lose the respect that I had for Clinton as a politician. I do not believe there is such a thing as false hope, as the Clinton's have accused Obama of promulgating. I can hope for whatever the hell i want to hope for. Now, though, I can only hope that Obama wins, because if Hillary wins, I won't bother hoping anymore.
