1) Jogging from the Couch to 5k plan is no longer on a weekly pattern, but mysteriously changing each run! And, midweek, I am scheduled to jog twenty minutes without stopping. O_O ( Read more... )

Now, there's an odd coincidence. Since we decided to sign up for the local farmers' market boxes, you're the second person, maybe the third on my LJ list who has written about doing the same thing, and other people know on Daily Kos are doing it too. Is this a new fad brought on by declining inspection/quality standards in our supermarket produce or what?

BTW, my diabetic father in law needs regular insulin injections before meals. When it's dinner time, he leaves, shoots and eats.

For me the reasoning is mostly wanting to eat local, seasonal, and varied produce without needing weekly effort to find out what that is. I've done it in the past as well, five-odd years ago when I lived in Vancouver. Plus it's just tasty!

I don't exactly know why I find this so thrilling, but I am absolutely entranced by the seasonal availability of produce. I'm eating the first shoots of spring! This is what comes up in May! Wow! Shoots and leaves!

It just seems... natural to me. Intuitive, maybe? I know the whole macrobiotic thing is huge on localy-grown, seasonal produce. (Not recommending macrobiotics here). Whether there'as any hardscience behind it, it just seems intuitively healthy. It certainly TASTES better!

We've got tons of lettuce in the garden right now; salads twice a day. It looks like one kind of lettuce might actually resist the heat long enough to be producing when the peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes are ripe.

oh, and it's exciting to see you soexcited about Couch to 5K.

It is a very intuitive "this feels right" thing. I wasn't quite expecting this kind of *thrill* from it though.

I also really like the challenge of seeing what food we have and then figuring out what I can make from it. Much more fun than hunting down ingredients for a given recipe.

YES!

I think people make themselves miserable by setting out to shop with a firm list. That way leads to buying mushy apples, wilted greens, and scary meat. ;)

I like to show off when my sweety says,"Oh, no, we don't have anything for supper." I just grin and say, "We don't? Watch THIS!"

Huh. I totally messed up this week. I've been doing the first run of the week all week - didn't even notice it was different. So I guess I'll start week 5, workout 2 on the day I thought I'd be starting week 6.

Now we're at the same place again, then. When are you in the habit of running?

Evenings after work. 6 or 6:30 ish. But it sounds like I'm going faster than you are, so I don't know if it's going to work out. Since last week, I've consistently been able to make it twice around the Lake Park Bistro-bridge-Lincoln Memorial-Lake Drive-Lake Park Bistro circuit in one run.

Hmm, I don't think I'm quite there. Did you see my progress map from the other week? I start at the bottom of the park and run up to the bistro and then loop around. I don't often make the full return to the bottom of the park.

Yay for CSA! I'm always thrilled -- weekly -- with our CSA. And this is after *years*, mind you, so the novelty apparently doesn't wear off. :) There just *is* something thrilling about it. And even more so when there is natural "drama" and you lose a crop of something for some reason or something. Very exciting.

And I find the same thrill in planning our menus based on whatever our pick up happens to be each week. Believe me, it forces us to eat a lot of stuff I probably would never otherwise buy (like turnips!).

Yes, the turnips! And finding out about kinds of veggies that I had no clue about, like green garlic shoots. Last week we had the best radishes. I never buy radishes!

I've gone for periods where I'd pretty much only buy frozen stuff (well, and apples and potatoes and carrots) because I'd never get around to using things before they got bad.

I found this, but it requires work on the farm as part of the cost of the share and the site's pretty out of date.
