Random nutrition rant

Does anyone else suspect that the effectiveness of glucosamine supplementation has something to do with people not eating enough tendons or sinewy bits or bone marrow or all the other parts of animals that don't come in nicely stripped packs or aren't as tasty/easy when food is abundant? I am a hypocrite because I don't eat those parts. But I tried ( Read more... )

That's really interesting, I wonder if our cave dwelling ancestors were relatively joint pain-free due to them eating off the fat of the land? I'm personally sold on glucosamine working - a running friend of mine puts in a lot of mileage, and swears her knee pains and soreness cleared up as a result of taking those supplements. Good enough for me!

To get as much as you would get in a daily tablet just from natural foods however, that sounds like a tough diet (no pun intended, what with the tendons and all!)

My step-dad's dog is old and arthritic, and was nearly unable to jump/run when she started glucosamine. It made an incredible difference.

I really wish I could find out exactly how much glucosamine or glucosamine-like-things are in various parts...

I had some problems in my arms, especially when lifting and splitting a lot of heavy wood. I started with the glucosamine on doctors recommendation. It took about six months, then I noticed a dramatic improvement. I still take one a day and have zero joint or tendon issue.
