When I was 8 years old our school used to show us educational programs to encourage us to read and spell. The series was called "look and read". The one I have the fondest memories of was "Through the Dragon's eye" which was a bit like the chronicles of Narnia but with a highly literate dragon as opposed to a lion.
It was pretty awesome and I can also remember it being pretty disturbing. The villain is a bit hardcore for a show made for 6-9 years olds but this was Thatcher's Britain and we had to be scared literate. I'm pretty sure it got me more into fantasy (Dr who had me on the sci-fi) and it did digress off into Epic rather then Educational such as this amazing showdown.

There was also a moment that scared the shit of me involving one of the kids been turned into purple gloop by the evil crowskull villain that gave me nightmares. The best part though was the amazing intro song which I don't think I'll ever forget - short and to the point. They should have done something similar with Game of thrones!
