Yesterday T flipped off the recess monitor lady while she was going after his friend and her back was turned, but another lunch lady saw him and he got busted. He's getting his first detention of his middle school career. As his "punishment" to be served at home, Michelle and I got him a biography about Gandhi which he's going to read. He was so ( Read more... )

Sheesh, I'd be annoyed if I was Ghandi's wife too.

My mom used to make me write essays as punishment. Sometimes they had to be along a "why I regret being a horrible child" theme but sometimes I would have to research a historical figure in the encyclopedia and write about that. You better make Triston give a book report to prove he read it!

Yeah we had a little Gandhi chat at breakfast this morning and talked a bit about the untouchables. We'll probably continue on the "Gandhi Moment" thing at meals til the book is done. It's pretty interesting, actually. Essays? Ouch. That sounds tough. I'm much more the verbal book report/ interview type. Any historical figures you had to research for punishment that you didn't immediately forget about afterward?

My mom is tough. I think what she was really trying to do was keep two young latchkey kids occupied. Another one of her favorite punishments was vacuuming, which is really hard work when you are small.

The only one that stuck is Patrick Henry, for some reason. Give me liberty or give me death! I vaguely remember Margaret Sanger too.

Buster and I started the day cracking up over your punishment. Well played!

I wish my mother had a similar parenting philosophy when I was a kid. More often than not, I was grounded for 2 months and then promptly ungrounded 4 days later when she found she was being driven crazy. I sort of lived for that hilarious GET OUT OF MY HOUSE breaking point, and worked extra hard every time to make sure it happened. My adult result was obviously rather unfocused until I came into my current, more meditative and yogic, incarnation.

Have you read White Tiger? Strong criticism of Ghandi in there. Aside from being interesting and amusing, it is also a very annoying book. I wanted to tell it to GET OUT OF MY HOUSE from time to time.

I haven't read White Tiger - right now I'm reading the biography on Joseph Priestley (super-scientist and chum of Jefferson and Franklin) by Steven Johnson called Invention of Air. Pretty interesting so far. Funny thing is I almost bought that book (White Tiger) but for some reason I forget now, didn't pull the trigger. But now that I know it's got some dirt on Gandhi in it, I've got to read it.
Glad you like our parenting- all the credit on this one goes to Michelle. She's so clever and that's why she's the best.
