I don't wash mine everyday, but then, I take baths, not showers. If you've always washed it everyday, you're better off sticking to it, your hair gets used to it and creates oil quicker, supposedly. Maybe try less shampoo? Some places reccomend deep conditioning once a week to preserve colour, you know those things you heat up and leave in?
I've never tried those deep leave-in conditioners, but I've also not heard them in conjunction with color lasting longer. I do use a weekly thing for conditioning and then a daily one that's weaker though. But I will look into it. Thanks!
You may be right about hair just getting used to it. My stylists have never said my hair is damaged or in bad shape because of it, and if I don't wash it every day it gets very greasy and I hate the way it looks and feels (which is why I was trying that dry shampoo, because otherwise I absolutely would never try not washing it every day).
If you need to wash your hair every day then do it :)
I wash mine about once a week, mostly because I just hate washing my hair. I use a shower cap in between washes, it's a nice big thick good quality one and I love it! If my hair is starting to look a bit feral I'll often just wash my fringe and that gets me through another day, two if I am lucky :)
Also, I use permanent black hair dye on most of my hair, I also use Joico shampoo and conditioner and haven't used cheap shampoos in years. The black still fades but takes less time than the semi permanent red I use in the fringe so I think fade is pretty normal. :(
Yeah, I know fade is normal, I was just hoping to make it last.
I think what it comes down to is what feels and looks right to the person, and I guess I just don't feel right unless I wash it every day, which kinda stinks as far as the color goes.
I wash my hair once a week and it never gets wet in between unless I get caught in the rain or happen to go swimming (neither of which happen very often). I've never used a shower cap, I just tie my hair up. But I don't have fringe - when I did have shorter hair in the front I used to tie it up and put a head band on to keep the front hair out of my way.
I wash mine once a week, twice in the summer. But I rinse it with water every time I shower (most everyday)
Hairdressers will always tell you less washing is better, but as it's been mentioned it really is personal preference. I like how my hair looks the dirtier it is. I also dye mine platinum which makes it REALLY dry. After I wash it I use a crazy leave in and try not to brush it for that day (which mostly means it is up in a scarf). Honestly I only wash it because my scalp gets crazy itchy if I don't.
You might want to try milder shampoos so you can still wash daily.
Advice from someone who has been dying her hair red for 15 years.jstanotherdreamMarch 28 2011, 06:25:23 UTC
It takes about two weeks to adjust to washing every other day. Wash your hair day one, day two, don't wet it in the shower (that will make the situation worse) and wear it up. Switch to an SLS-free, paraben free shampoo (I like the Yes to Carrots line). SLS is a strong detergent and will strip your color and it strips all the natural oils from your scalp... which causes your scalp to over-produce oil which is why your hair is oily by day two.
You just have to make it through the first two weeks. Wearing your hair up will make it manageable. After you get over it, your hair will be SO much healthier in the long run and your color will last longer. Worth it!
