New Draft 5/29/10
The heat settles heavily,
Crushing the body into the mattress;
Outside, the local drunks call to each other,
Echoing prayers for rain down main street.
The air suddenly lightens as if to answer
And when the rain comes,
with the weight of the air removed
the world exhales slowly,
while listening to the local drunks
shriek and duck for cover.
