Ficlet for elfscribe5 - ULTIMATELY, THE FALL, Maeglin & Others, R

Hardly Birthday fare, but long, long ago in a galaxy far away elfscribe5 requested Maeglin/Glorfindel and the keywords fall/fly. I really couldn't bring myself to couple the pair - but they're here, together in an oh so sordid way. Gulp. Happy(?)Birthday Elfy!

A powerful, action filled piece :D

I especially liked the end - the illusion and then the hard reality.

Wow, just wow! Was that ever powerful! Beautifully written sweetie. Poor Maeglin, almost makes me feel sorry for him. He is a wonderful character, actually. One of the few in Tolkien's opus that is truly complicated. So sad that he sees a vision of happiness just before the end. "Comes Idril, running through the trees, touching their bark and singing as she passes." That's beautiful! And interesting contrast between that and his mother earlier -- positively Freudian. You've captured a lot in a short space. Thank you for the present!
And thank you so much for the other pressies. You have TOTALLY spoiled me! Hugs!

Yeah, not exactly fluffy, is it? Happy BDay, Elfy, she says a little sarcastically. But that's what betrayer elves do to me. I'm glad you enjoyed it anyway. & I'll get back to you later this AM on your email and lovely ecard - thankies!

Ooooh; this is deliciously dark. I've only recently been re-acquainted with Silmarillion-based stories, and Elves in particular, but I remember Maeglin in particular being so complex and having suffered unfairly in so many ways. This is such an evocative vignette; as elfscribe5 said, there are some beautiful images here, especially the one of Idril in the trees. There is such poignancy in Maeglin having a vision of a happy ending just before his death.

Thank you for sharing!

Oh, cosmos! How dark and intense and brutal. But the emotions just sing. Excellent short fic, En!

This a terrific piece. I love everything about it. I have always thought that if I were an actor and someone were doing the film version of The Silmarillion that I would want to play Maeglin. I have always foiund one-dimensional protrayals of him profoundly dissatisfying. (Well, there are always exceptions: Tyellas did an awesome job of pure-evil Maeglin.) But yours seems not only truer to canon, but psychologically more valid. He was also very young when he left with Aredhel to go to Gondolin. This part really got to me:

"The White Lady swoops him into her arms, and for a moment he forgets the watchful eyes and the old elf at the forge, allows himself to accept her succor. She quietly croons the only name that he knows.
“Lómion, Lómion.”
He allows himself to be nestled, but bridles at her touch. He needs no one. Wants no one’s help. He can do this himself. And the black loneliness of defiant self-reliance and jealously begin to grow in his heart. He did not have an easy time of it. Pulled between his parents in his childhood home. ( ... )

Wow! You wrote as many words in your comment as there are in the story itself! Thank you. I certainly understand Maeglin, but I still don't like him very much. Though, in a way it was all fated (the fall of Gondolin)and someone was going to do it - hmmm. Just made me think of Judas Iscariot there for a moment.

And thanks so much for pointing out the hair color error. I really appreciated it -

I don't think I like him either! Pretty creepy actually. But the fascination reminds me of how my daughter and I love to talk about some of her former friends, whom we got to know far better than we had ever wanted to, and, yet, still years later, love to try to figure out what is so profoundly wrong with them and how they got to be that way!
