Watanuki's eventual choice

Hey, two posts in one day! I just have a lot to get off my mind, so I am theorizing.

Watanuki will have to make an important decision soon, or so it has been implied in the most recent chapters of xxxHOLiC.

Whether to continuing existing as he is or to cease that existence is the decision I am almost positive that Watanuki will be faced with. And while it seems to be an easy decision, it would be were Watanuki be close to normal, but we all know he is anything but normal.

If Watanuki is who I think he is (which is explained here & here in some detail), then the decision will be so much harder and, no matter what Watanuki decides, people will be hurt--emotionally and perhaps even physically.

The decision I fear is coming is to cease existence and return the memories he is created out of to Sakura, or continue to exist and doom Sakura to always be missing an important part of herself.

I believe the key to winning is in that Watanuki must choose not return to Sakura--he needs to continue existing if they are to have a chance at beating Fei Wong Reed. I wonder, would the Ruins still work the way that Fei Wong wants them to if the key--Sakura--is missing an important memory--the memory of her most precious person? Perhaps it won't and that is why Watanuki must not return to Sakura or perhaps they need simply need an existing Watanuki to do something for the final battle.

From the way that Yuuko has been preparing Watanuki--like making sure that Doumeki pounded it into Watanuki's hard head that sacrificing himself is not an acceptable solution in any situation--Watanuki must choose to continue to exist. But it will be so hard for Watanuki to choose himself over Sakura's happiness. But the fact that Watanuki knows others will be sad if he were to disappear gives the hope that he will choose the happiness of his friends over the happiness of Sakura and Syaoran.

But, damn, it is going to be close. Yuuko will just have to not play fair and make sure that Doumeki and Himawari--if she won't present a danger to Watanuki--are present when the decision needs to be made. Maybe she can get Kohane to come too. Kohane may be just what tips the balance--Watanuki can rationalize that Doumeki and Himawari can still be friends without him and have other friends, but he won't be able to use that reasoning with Kohane. Kohane, who is so like himself, will not be so easily reasoned away. *grin* Now I know why Kohane is important--I love it when I can figure out a good puzzle.

From the way Yuuko and Mokona reacted to Watanuki's befriending of Kohane, she was not one of his intended companions, which could explain why Yuuko told Mokona that Watanuki would have to decide this on his own--he would have to be the one to decide to make a connection to this girl or not. He chose to connect, to create a bond with her, and it could very well be the thing that saves them all. Watanuki is Kohane's only friend--her only connection to humanity as her mother has rejected her--and through him, she meets Doumeki, who could very easily become another friend for her. But if not for Watanuki, Kohane would have no one who cares for her, no one for her to love and be loved by in return.

Kohane will be key to Watanuki choosing to continue his existence. The one connection that Watanuki made of his own free will will be the one to save them all. Many people were wondering what purpose does Kohane serve? She will be Watanuki's reason--the one thing that will make him selfish enough to put his continued existence over the happiness of another.
