first impressions.
The first time Okura saw Ryo - and he wasn't quite sure what had piqued his curiosity, what had drawn him to the other boy, maybe it was the bright yellow jumper or perhaps it was the smile or the confident aura - but he knew he definitely wanted to know more, even if it was just a little bit more, about that boy who always, always smiled like the sun was coming out after a rainy day.
The first time Ryo saw Okura, he thought 'Man, he's ugly, and why is he so tall?' and even though he really, really, really wanted to say it, there was something in that look Okura sent him that made him pause and the half written rant in his head was dying before he could even comprehend what was happening.
second thoughts.
Okura knows that when Ryo pats him awkwardly on the head and tells him to fix up his ugly face, or drumming, or dancing, or singing, or anything and everything else, as much as possible - though it wasn't as crappy as it was before - or else he wouldn't be allowed into the Sexy Osaka Man's presence then he's really trying to say 'I'm proud of you.'
Ryo can still remember that time - but only one, he insists - that Okura had gotten the better of him. Ryo had pouted and hit the other boy as hard as he could but all Okura did was laugh and tackle him to the ground, tickling his sides mercilessly until he grumbled an admittance that Okura was indeed his very best friend now and could he please be let up now since Okura's fat ass was cutting off his air supply?
third time's the charm.
Okura knows that Ryo is uncomfortable with his height, his weight, his body. But, as Okura used to tell Ryo, one day he will grow into a big, strong man who will be capable of anything. That is what Okura believes strongly, and he was trying not to sound patronising but somehow manages it anyway.
But it's all okay, since Ryo knows that he truly does believe, and he is grateful for that. Because when Okura says it, Ryo also believes.
Okura can be a bit of a space cadet, but Ryo can space out even more given the right circumstances. So when he's thinking back, spacing out - and indeed this happens way too much and wasn't there something about too much thinking not being good for you? - he remembers all those fond times he shared with Okura growing up. And Ryo's still growing, but so is Okura and they both know that no matter what happens, they won't leave each other behind.
four ways.
Okura knows that Ryo likes his confessions like he likes his coffee; strong but still kinda sweet with a subtle flavour underneath. Contrary to popular opinion, Ryo did not actually drink straight black - on a regular basis, anyhow. And though his coffee required a very specific amount of each particular substance, Ryo always managed to get it exactly right. Which is why Okura was determined to get this confession right - since he only had one chance to do it right because if he didn't he'd never muster enough courage to do it again and he'd most probably end up crawling into his corner of woe and cultivating mushrooms for the rest of his life.
Ryo always remembers that time, always, always, when they were having one of those conversations - the randomly aimless ones that carry on for hours on end but they're so interesting and fun and just feel so right that neither of them want to stop - when all of a sudden, Okura was leaning in maybe a little too close, and maybe he was leaning in just a little bit too close too because the next thing he knows is that there's this awkward pressure on his lips and gosh, what type of Chapstick does Okura use? because his lips are really soft and they taste just like coffee.
Okura knows that when Ryo's standing in front of him, fidgeting with the hem of his shirt and staring at his shoes - speechless for once - before looking up at him with that unreadable fire in his eyes and lunging at him, pinning him to the wall and kissing him so hard and hungrily that all Okura can do is respond to it in the only way he knows how - because god, Ryo's a really good kisser - and what he was trying to say was 'I really like you.'
Okura knows that when Ryo trips him so he stumbles into Maru before spinning dizzily into Hina, then tripping again over Yasu only to land in Ryo's arms and to find his whines dying on his lips as Ryo kisses him long and hard - stunning everyone into silence as they are on international television - all Ryo wanted to do was say 'I love you' - and maybe tell the world about it in the process.
101.
And Okura always knows what Ryo's trying to say, because he understands that while finding the right words are hard, finding the perfect ones are even harder.
(a.n. 101 is the number '5' in binary form)
