There are progressive groups which say the answer is to get involved on the local level by electing local politicians who mirror our values...or by running for office ourselves. Local politicians become state politicians, who become national politicians. Also, there is a lot of legislation which is done on the state and local level that the federal government either cannot touch or would have a lot of difficulty touching. Take the marriage amendment, for example. The federal government couldn't get away with it, but various states were able to get discriminatory marriage amendments added to their state constitutions. It appears most of our power (for evil or for good) is local.
