What do you consider fluent?
Do you consider yourself fluent in English? When do you know when you've crossed that magical line?
I think it's hard to tell, sometimes... And there are varying degrees.
I feel like I'll never know another language like a native spaeker. Too lazy!!! :)

I agree. Vera, you should be a lawyer. If we were in the court you would trap me into logical imperfection of my claims ;)
By 'almost fluent' I mean he can speak on life subjects in Russian such as food, lend lords, etc. We have never talked on scientific topics. He has some accent but he is pretty understandable and clear and does not make many mistakes.
Yeah, I am lazy too. I met a Russian lady who took a special pronunciation class and she sounds so American. Even though I've been here for almost 3 years my accent is still way heavy. I am jealous!..
Btw, did you have a chance to look at Leslie's blog: http://slovami.livejournal.com? She is an American who lived in Russia for a year (or two). Her Russian is almost flawless and the blog itself is interesting.

I'm jealous of people who are so disciplined. I don't understand how they do it. It's shaming to realize how much better one should be at something, sometimes.
It would be interesting to hear you speak, in person.
I've known people who've lived her over ten or fifteen years and still have very heavy accents...
Thank you for the tip! I will read her journal... And weep!!! :/
