Musical Atrophy

How do you go about finding new music to listen to? Since I commute, and can't really listen to the radio at work, I have to work at seeking out new artists to listen to. I keep meaning to try out pandora.com for that music-matching thing.

One of my latest favorite podcasts is the classical Concert at the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum. I'm ( Read more... )

If you are interested in jazz or blues music, you might want to listen to Ella Fitzgerald, Sara Vaughn or Billie Holliday (my spelling is optional) as classic vocalists. I don't have a lot from these artists, but it was my first start with jazz about 10 years ago and worked pretty well. I can bring something over for you to borrow next time I see you.

Also, based on Bob Mould, you might like Chroma Key.

If you're looking for a good internet radio station, I recommend KEXP.org. They also have a song-of-the-day podcast.

WERS, WFMU, KCRW are other good radio stations with online broadcasting and/or podcasts.

Also, when I was on the bus today, I thought you'd really enjoy Iron & Wine, and also Great Lake Swimmers.

You still owe me my Mountain Goats CD, BTW :-)

Subscribe to audiography. Some weeks are topics that don't interest me at all, but I have found loads of music there that has sparked my interest in experimenting and exploring new groups. It's mostly pop, though. No brilliant ideas for discovering your tastes in classical.

I love classical choral music (Requiems, Chorales, etc.). Comes from being in choir for so many years. If you would like, I can make you a mix of some classical stuff I like and see what you like or don't like. Probably not all of anything, unless that's what you want....
