Notice to the humorless

Whenever I see a "documentary" done in earnest on an offbeat topic, I wonder how in the hell can someone get through it without laughing their ass off. I see the comedy in things which were not intended to be as such.

It's like what if someone did Best of Show about the "behind the scenes of dog show enthusiasts and their dogs" as a serious- ( Read more... )

That's why I sit in the back so it's harder for people to tell that it's me laughing at someone losing an arm because they're an idiot or similar things. :) Or cheering when someone dies, or making funny comments at the stupid parts. I totally agree with you.

That would be like not laughing during Napoleon Dynamite and thinking that it is a profound and serious art piece type of commentary about socially retarded people living in Idaho.

This is a line I have to share with my friends, it's just had me laughing all morning.

How in the world could a person NOT laugh during "American Movie"? Haha! What was his name... Uncle Bill or whatever? "It's alright.... it's ok.... you have, uhmmmmm, something to live for.... um, Jesus told me so..." hahaha! Fantastic! Mike Schank... oh geezzz... he's either brilliant or a complete waste... I'm still trying to figure that out.

The Same Can Be Said For Any Film packgrog November 19 2004, 09:41:26 UTC
Any film that is too self-important can become completely laughable. "The Messenger", that Joan of Arc movie with Milla Jovavich(sp?), was utter pretentious crap that begged to be made fun of. Some otherwise serious flicks might have moments that are laughable, intentional or otherwise. The flying pastries and man-eating fridge in Requiem For A Dream are intentionally but darkly laughable. It was also somewhat disturbing how FEW people laughed at Dr. Strangelove the first time I saw it (and that was MEANT to be comedic dark irony). I'm not sure I've ever seen a documentary I would consider laughable. But then, the last one I saw was Fog of War, and I found it difficult to laugh at MacNamarra's discussion about his choice to use napalm. Yikes.

But yeah, I'm with you on not wanting to take things too seriously. Hell, I laugh at myself all the time! ;)
