Well the verses are complicated. I only specialise in the chorus.

But as a guess, I think there are two days the music died according to the songwriter. One being the death of Buddy Holly, the other being the infamous Altamont festival.

And as a hint, the verses can be understood if you know about music, for the chorus, you need to know about Don Maclean.

Mick Jagger is Satan. A reference to the Rolling Stones song Sympathy For The Devil but also a reference to Don Maclean's opinion that the Rolling Stones were the antithesis of rock and roll.
