Inspired by some fellow RPers to write this out... survey stolen from Lexie

BIRTHPLACE/HOME: Seattle, Washington, USA
PARENTS: Ankur Singh, Ria Singh
SIBLINGS: younger sister, Simran Kapoor (married)
HISTORY:

Sanjay is the son of Indian immigrants to the United States. Both of his parents originate from the Indian state, Punjab, but met in New Dehli, India. While in New Dehli working as engineers (Mother in electrical, Father in mechanical) at a respectable company, they were offered transfer positions to the United States. A year after arriving, Sanjay was born February 25, 2231. Although his parents consider themselves liberal, they ran a strict household: education being the most important factor in their son's upbringing. Sanjay was able to read by the age of 2 and work out basic algebra by 5. Growing up, the only things that Sanjay understood about life was to always go to the temple and pray in the morning, learn as much as possible during school, and study harder when the bells ended. His parents had everything figured out for him: he'd go to a respectable university (hopefully MIT), become an engineer (preferably not civil), and marry a moral and honorable girl.

Due to the strict expectations from his parents, Sanjay found himself uncomfortably awkward in any social situations growing up, quickly realizing he didn't fit in with his peers. He knew more than they did (although never pointed it out), and wasn't a typical boy in the sense of rough housing and interested in sports. That being said, he did have a close circle of about 4 friends growing up, quality taking importance over quantity, who shared a similar background to his. Starting in high school, he developed a rebellious nature after tiring of such forced rules and would run off with friends during weekend study sessions. When college letters started coming in, he once again proved rebellious in that he turned down the acceptance to MIT to go to Purdue University. Once there and away from friends, he reverted back to all things familiar: studying. By sophomore year of school, Sanjay was involved in a research position over fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. During junior year, he accepted a TA position on top of his research and during that summer going into senior year, did an internship through his father's old company in New Dehli marking it the second time he had ever been in India.

During his final two years at Purdue, he realized he had become too reclusive, and forced himself to make some friends outside the classroom. Once again he was in a close knit group of people, loosened up, and managed to have fun. He even developed feelings for a fellow research partner and managed to start dating her, only after a month into the relationship found out she was using Sanjay to get back at her ex-boyfriend (sadly it worked) and broke his heart. When graduation came, frustrated at the failure of his relationship and how it seemed like his parents stifled him from making his own decisions, he performed the most rebellious act of his life and joined Starfleet.

Quickly going through the academy, he graduated with honors and was to enter the Fleet as a Lieutenant. Anxiety overwhelmed him of the thought of being responsible of so many people and deemed himself incompetent for such a thing. He had a breakdown and convinced the overseeing board he was completely content with rank of Ensign and refused any other offer of a higher position. The rest, as they say, is history.

That he really is just as boring as people think.

Relationships

1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
They were angry at him for not going to MIT, but ended up forgiving him about it. But when he ran off to join Starfleet, they threatened to disown him, mostly due to fears he'd be killed and not understanding what Starfleet really was. Although they became more understanding after the Naranda incident, he still doesn't keep in touch with them that much.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He has a sister who is 4 years younger than him. She's seen in better light than he is, since she too became an engineer, went to Harvard, and is married to the 'ideal' Indian man.

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
He has some cousins in India, but doesn't know them that well since he's only interacted with them about 2 times. Despite being rebellious, he does love his family.

He is religious, but doesn't take it too seriously. He does try to pray each morning, more out of habit than anything.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
He does, growing in a strict family, he has adopted his parents beliefs on most topics. However, he considers himself far more open-minded than they ever will be. Starfleet with it's huge crew of various races have drastically opened him to new things. When it comes to women, he does try to be respectful and be a gentleman.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
Religious-wise, nearly everyone differs from him and he's fine with that. He's a mix of tolerant, indifferent, and curious at everyone's different viewpoints.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
He finds a lot of the ensigns still too new and fresh for some of their required duties in engineering, but he doesn't mind mentoring them and explaining things better if he can.

Comfortable. He doesn't spend his money on much beyond importing food to cook.

Upper middle-class family. It's changed in the sense he has been supporting himself entirely since graduating college.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
Somehow, Sanjay has a private room, perhaps from lingering confusion over his rank initially. He never brought himself to complain about it… Since he spends most of his time down in engineering, it's more of a place to crash than a home although he does have his lazy days.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
Food shipped from Earth. Access to various technical manuals.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
He's a mechanical engineer to the Enterprise. Typically he monitors the piping network and sometimes works in the transport room. He's content, since something always changes or comes up each day.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Free time is typically him cooking, reading technical manuals and new research, sleeping, and recently, trying to spend time with Charlene.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods?
He does eat meat, but stays away from beef and pork products. He does try to participate in fasting on certain religious holidays (although it's a bit harder in space). He only drinks socially.
