He had his voice back. Of that he was eternally grateful. He was also grateful that looking over the diplomatic mission files didn't make him want to smash his fist into a wall anymore. "Sorry. Hi. Yeah, I kind of figured I would startle you no matter how I tried to grab your attention. I briefly considered tap dancing but I don't think it would have been appreciated...socially," David said as he squatted next to her.
"Excuse me, sir. Is anyone sitting here?" he asked to the lieutenant next to an empty chair. He gave a confused glare back. "Right. I don't know why I asked that. I'm just gonna...take...nevermind." He rolled the chair next to Gaila and sat down.
"How-uh-how are you doing, Gaila?" He sidled near to her at the computer and glanced, starting at the amount of data that he didn't comprehend and looked back at her.

Lieutenant Storal hated to be interrupted while at work, and Gaila cast him quick smile in apology. He frowned but nodded in reply and returned to his programming.
With a shrug she re-focused on David. "I'm fine," she answered automatically, and then paused. Was that even true? "Well, I... I'm okay," she decided. She let out a short breath. "I think. How are you?"

He winced when she said she was fine. He cocked his head when she continued, amending. He pursed his lips when she concluded her uncertainty.
"Better," he said with a smile and found his hand on her shoulder. "That was..." he bit his lip. "I really appreciate what you did for me," David said. There was a flicker of eyes on him from Storal but he didn't see it. "I know you might not think so but it was--I was out of control and I appreciate what you did." The flicker of eyes happened again. "This is coming out wrong."
He leaned his head where his hand was on her shoulder. He wasn't usually this uncouth.
