Observation Deck - Day 37 (evening) - private

Sep 27, 2010 02:14

It had been three days, and Nyota felt exactly the same. Somehow she and Spock had managed to keep the breakup relatively quiet, and while a few people knew she was hoping it would take a while before the rumors really started flying. Hopefully when they did, most people would know better than to ask her about it ( Read more... )

In all honesty, if Christine didn't spend so much time worrying about others, she would be a miserable and bitter person. Not that she wished ill on her crew, certainly not her friends, but when fate inevitably bit them in the ass, she liked to be there. She liked to be able to help.

And baked goods? They helped.

Her perma-warm little container of goodies in hand, Christine had wandered first to Nyota's quarters, hoping to find the communication's officer there, rather than having to wander around to try to give her a hug and some comfort food. Alas, Nyota Uhura was never a woman to make anything easy. So Christine went first to the communications lab, then down to the observation deck. Spying her friend's familiar form, Christine approached quietly, coming to stand silently next to her.

Maybe it was a little counterproductive to let her mind wander through memories of the time she and Spock had spent together, but she felt that it might give her some sort of closure. She could still treasure those memories, just as she treasured her memories of Reed. Right now, however, they were still confusing and a little painful. Through the haze of her thoughts she heard the doors swish open. Her frown deepened but she didn't turn around; she was in no mood to be around people. Glancing over at the person who came to stand beside her, she felt a swell of relief at seeing it was Chris. Did she come looking for me? she wondered but didn't ask. It would be just like her friend to worry and seek her out, and she couldn't help feeling grateful even though a part of her really didn't want to talk about this. "Hi, Chris," she said softly.

"Hey, Nyota," Christine replied, voice just as soft. A little part of her wanted to ask how the other officer was holding up. A larger part of her remembered how useless she was when Roger left and made her realize that, no, Nyota probably wasn't okay. Hell, it'd been nearly a year since she took off her engagement ring and she still wasn't okay most of the time. Nyota was made of strong stuff than she was, but still only human.

Instead of asking, then, she held up the container. "I've been baking."

She sighed, almost inaudibly. She knew she would probably end up talking to Chris about the breakup, but a big part of her just wanted to brush it off and pretend she was fine. That's how she would act around almost everyone, but Chris was one of her best friends. She didn't really want to pretend.

The next words brought a small smile to her face. It was exactly like Chris to bring her baked goods to soothe her distress, and she couldn't help feeling grateful for the gesture. "That's the best news I've had all day," she said, voice still soft but with a definite note of amusement.
