I saw two little boys totally hook up their parents.
So there I was, wearing my cute little red peacoat which always makes me feel terribly friendly, even if I've had a bad day. I had just unlocked the side door, here, and saw a man sort of struggling over with his Freaking Adorable little boy. I held the door. Right after they popped in, a woman came around the corner with her own little boy who was around the same age, so again, I held the door. I mean, it's a sin to not hold the door. Not everyone in my building understands that it's a sin, but I do.
Anyway.
I recognize both of the adults. The lady and her son live near me, with no father around, and I overheard the man telling a (presumable) friend that his divorce had just been finalized. So as we are all standing there (I was penned in by the children, who have just stopped in the middle of the hallway), her little boy asked his little boy, "hey! Can you come over for dinner?" His little boy looked up at his father and asked, "can I?"
Now, let me tell you... the woman is beautiful. She has this thick, glossy brown hair that is always just a little bit curled. She dresses like a professional, a woman of some exotic and lovely and unplaceable ethnicity. He kind of looks like a younger Edward James Olmos, actually, always wearing a letter carrier's uniform. He has an air of hardworking authority, a face that is handsome in its ruggedness, I think, but in a subtle way that I think takes time for some to notice. So this man looked at his son, and said something like, "well, uh..." in an uncomfortable tone of voice, and then looked at the beautiful woman. Something changed in him, then. He asked in "the tone", a bit louder now, and somehow more certain of himself, "Well... would you have dinner with us?"
A person would have to be dead to not catch his meaning, which is why my heart kind of swelled with pride when she looked at her little boy, then back to the man, and smiled. "Yes," she said. "I think we'd love to have dinner with you."
Who knows what will happen, but it was... it was sweet. I guess wonderful things happen in unexpected ways sometimes, don't they?
