Advice about phones

I'm planning to switch mobile phone providers (for the first time in years -- I'm kind of scared about it, actually), which means I will wind up getting a new phone. The two top candidates for me are the Sony Ericsson T616 (almost exactly like the T610) and the Sony Ericsson T637 (almost exactly like the T630 ( Read more... )

Sorry, can't help. I have an ancient nokia that I'm afraid to replace because I love it so (long battery life + excellent reception == YAY!)

John prefers Nokia phones because their alert for incoming messages is the best -- and he really can't afford to miss notifications of servers going down! We recently bought him a new Nokia at full retail price, because the mobile phone provider we're switching away from didn't have anything suitable.

How is it best? More reliable? More configurable? (I'm curious because I've been using this phone for several years and have no basis for comparison) Which phone did John get?

I've definitely noticed a lack of "good" phones at the provider outlets -- I helped my mom switch providers and get a new phone in December and I was not impressed with the selection based on features I was interested in. I was also not impressed with the T-mobile salesdrone who lied to my mom about the features of a phone and the terms of the contract to try to get her to buy it. Yeesh.

As compared with Sony Ericsson phones, the incoming message alert on Nokia phones is louder, and the vibration feature is more noticeable.

We generally only consider Sony Ericsson and Nokia, because our laundry list of "required features" includes bluetooth as well as international GSM bands, which is a scarce combination from other providers.

We're currently T-Mobile customers, and are planning to switch to AT&T Wireless.

I'm a Nokia girl so I can't give any advice :) I can't afford full price phones at all, and I'd still be using the horrible 3210 (which was passed through the family) if it weren't for second hand phones. The 3210 was just not nice. I liked 3310, but then the 8310 tempted me away. So pretty.

I've just travelled a lot and had 14 hours sleep, I'm not quite right yet :)

Two things:

(1) I've heard that AT&T is divesting from the cellphone business, and selling their existing infrastructure and customer base to Cingular. I don't know whether this is really true, but I've heard it.

(2) Battery life is approximately my last criterion for phone selection. Form factor is much higher, for example. Unless you know you'll be spending a lot of talk time and putting pressure on your battery capacity, I'd go with the phone you like carrying around better.

Cingular is acquiring AT&T, but I like AT&T's rate plans better, so I'd rather buy from them right now.

Battery life is actually important to me, because I use Bluetooth a fair amount, and unless I remember to turn Bluetooth on and off when I'm actually using it, it sucks up a lot of battery life just sitting there doing nothing.
