SHERLOCK

soupytwist and etcetera_cat did a lot of flappy hands over Sherlock on twitter, and I am practically self-pimping, so hey!

Okay, that was pretty freaking awesome. I don't love it unreservedly? Mostly because Watson's ability to STILL kick your ass six ways from Sunday, limp shmimp, was one of my favorite things about the movie, so while I do appreciate that they played the Conan Doyle game of pin the wound on the Watson? I still feel like it's faily. Also: THE CABBIE DID IT, FFS. It doesn't quite step on the points they earned for the show-not-tell of having people casually taking cabs earlier in the episode, but holy hell, dudes, stop having your characters be stupid as a plot device.

And that's... it. They made a modern-day adaptation of Holmes and I have all of TWO complaints about it. I'm pretty sure they call this feeling JOY.

Benedict Cumberbatch, aside from having the best damn name I've seen since I found a Clinkenbeard in the phone book that one time, is FANTASTIC. He's just - he's so weird! And he has those bizarre outbursts of physicality that are perfect - stepping over the table, practically crouching on chairs, gets hit by a car and doesn't notice. Also he's kind of really hot. And they're not fucking up the Watson characterization which equals AUTOMATIC POINTS. I... get defensive about Watson, you guys.

I am SO SO EASY for well-done references to canon, and this thing is dropping them left and right. OF COURSE IT'S RACHEL, THE GERMAN WORD WOULD JUST BE RIDICULOUS. MRS HUDSON IS NOT THEIR HOUSEKEEPER. And the SCRATCHES ON THE PHONE, oh god. I kind of called who Mark Gatiss was playing and I still literally CLAPPED WITH GLEE at the end. And just - the giggling! And the blanket of shock! I love that John thinks this dude is kind of batshit but also deeply and unexpectedly awesome, and that Sherlock, the guy who doesn't really do that friendship thing, so obviously likes him and respects him against all expectations. They're crazy in similar ways! John will call him on his bullshit! They just click and oh - HEARTS (Also I love that they manage to use first names in this adaptation in a way that doesn't feel forced or odd.)

So basically my actual least favorite thing about this is the miniseries aspect. I want allll the episodes. :(
