"Strange, melancholy high..."

Jack imagined he could read in her emerald gaze a longing for highway and the hypnotic animation of telephone wires dipping and weaving through finger printed glass at sixty miles per hour.

You are not an artist, and it’s not because you’re holed up in the Little City Grocer for nine hours a day and you go home too tired to summon your fucking muse. You’re not an artist because you’re too pussy to be one.”

Heh, this conversation sounds familiar. Do you really feel this way about artists who choose not to be homeless, or is this dialogue mainly there more just to present both perspectives?? Morbidly curious, I guess.

I really like the phrase "the alchemy of October." And the ending definitely left me wondering.

Oh, I feel that way about myself sometimes. I wouldn't put that shit on anyone else, but sometimes I'm like 'Man, Lauren, you're a pussy for not quitting your job and writing/drawing/acting fulltime, whatever the consequences.'

I mainly put it in there as something to wake Jack up a little, though.

Interesting...It's a unique perspective that I don't hear often, actually. I look forward to seeing how (or if, I guess) this influences Jack!

Really, though, if someone had no place to shower or rest because they had no home, and tried to audition for a part in a play or buy art supplies, following the dream then might be hard to pull off, too. So I guess maybe there's some middle ground, somewhere. :)

Throughout the year, he looked forward to the alchemy of October and was invariably disillusioned when it finally came about; he hoped this time would be different.
