Today, going to lunch, I discovered yet another undercarriage-destroying speed bump. This is a rather minor event, especially in Charlotte, but it just really got to me today. I'm trying to get work done right now, but I don't think it'll happen to I post a little bit of a rant ( Read more... )

if it's in August, we should get drinks or something. I'll be gone in June and July (Icelandic immersion course followed by fieldwork in Scotland), but I'll be back around July 27th-28th.

My problems aren't quite the same, but they're similar enough (unhappy with my social life, unhappy and uncertain about my professional life) that I feel compelled to chime in...misery loves company, or something. Obviously, I don't have the answers, but maybe it helps to know you're not the only one feeling displaced. Grad school is teh suxxors, and I suspect there's a post-Swarthmore effect, too.

I've got a Winston Churchill quote up on the whiteboard next to my desk at home, right above the deadlines I keep missing: "If you're going through hell...keep going."

Thanks. Especially since I don't entirely know if this is just my annual anti-grad school reaction, or really a reaction against Charlotte. I'm not even entirely giving the city a fair chance, given that I live in the (relative) boonies, and if I didn't, I would still not have much time to spend enjoying the city. Just frustrating.

I want a life, but every aspect of it is thwarted in some way or another by school. I am *so* ready to graduate, so I guess it really is time to get to work on that dissertation (once I know what exactly I'm going to have to do for my second round of quals... guh. i was so happy to be essentially done with them at Wash U).
