holy smokes!

In the past few weeks, I've seen several fics that have a character getting a concussion, and immediately starting a romantic relationship with someone, and it really bothers me. I hope it is not a new trend. I get that hurt/comfort is a thing, but probably-impaired cognitive abilities = not really able to give consent to sexual activity. ( Read more... )

Regarding Star Trek- the big disconnect you'd get going from TOS to Voyager is that you'd lose the introduction of the Borg, and Jeri Ryan's character on Voyager is a "friendly" Borg.

Regarding Comicon - would it be completely tasteless and tacky to ask you about picking up one of the exclusives at the Marvel comic booth? Skottie Young, one of the artists, has done a series of commemorative pins and my daughter REALLY wants one of the sets.

No worries if you don't want to take on the burden - I been to Comicon. I know how it can get. (If you'd be willing though, drop me an email?)

I knew you'd like Granite Flats, it's so cute and fluffy compared to most shows these days. I have a hard time with the 'dark and edgy' thing tv shows all seem to do nowadays.

Daredevil is dark, less gritty and edgy, and more real? I guess, it didn't ping as excessive to me. Might not be your thing, but it's nothing compared to say, Banshee or Ray Donovan or Hemlock Grove.

Also Voyager is only loosely connected to the other shows, like it might help to have watched TNG or DS9 for the Cardassian/Maquis backstory, but it is by no means required.

Well, S1 is cute & fluffy! I also just love spies in general, & so I love how it dealt with the spy stuff! In general, spy stuff seems to be so superficial like James Bond & Get Smart, or so melodramatic like Alias or The Americans. This sort of explored a spy as a person, like, there is no glamor, no tricks, no gadgets. Just a person being a person and getting wrecked.

I've been having trouble getting through Daredevil, but I think that's because I have the attention span of a gnat rather than because the darkness seems try-hard. I feel like often shows that are aiming for gritty realism make something even worse than reality? Like, they strive to create a world utterly ruled by cynicism where no one is ever kind ever even in small things.

And it often comes with an unpleasant wallowing in sexism.

If you have Netflix, YOU should watch Granite Flats! It's a show that has a team of 3 teens working together to solve mysteries far better than all the adults in town. And it takes place during the early 60's and looks fab.

I get what you mean! And one of the reasons I get into shows is because I get really into the characters (or even ONE character can make a show for me), buuut if everyone's a jerk, then. I just don't feel like watching it because I don't care what happens to them! It's my own cynicism coming out! XD I'll probably see if sis wants to give it a shot after we finish The Almighty Johnsons. OTOH, I am really looking forward to AKA Jessica Jones!!!!

Perhaps I will! I just seem to be having even more trouble than usual finishing shows lately. I've had the next disc of The Mindy Project sitting on the end table for weeks now and haven't gotten around to it even though I've really enjoyed the episodes I've seen so far.

Daredevil is not one of those shows where everyone's a jerk. Foggy and Karen are not jerks at all (I think you would probably like Foggy a lot), and Matt has his flaws but jerkishness is not really one of them.

That's another one I need to give a shot! I saw an extended clip of the pilot, and it really put me off, because rape jokes. (Same thing for 2 Broke Girls...) Since then, through pop cultural zeitgeist, I've gotten to know Mindy Kaling a little bit better & I kinda love her, so.

Sounds good!
