State of Mind

I should probably post an update so that people know I’m not dead.

So. Yes. Not dead. We’re in the middle of moving (officially next week), so if you have reason to want/need our new address, ping me and I’ll send it to you. For those that missed this news, our landlord sold the multi-family house we were renting an apartment in, and the new owners ( Read more... )

Rift had several problems:

(1) The dynamic content (the rifts) was grindy after the novelty wore off.

(2) There was only a single level of difficulty in the end game raids, and they tuned them too high.

(3) The grindiness was amplified greatly when they added Planar Attunement. This was like EQ's AA. This also killed the idea of playing alts, and made it hard to catch up for new players.

Having said that, I stuck around until the guild I had been raiding with went to SWTOR (which they left a few months later). At that point Blizzard was acting contrite enough about the Cataclysm fiasco that I felt I could return.

I never got beyond level 8 or so, so I didn't know what the other issues were. I got the game to play with friends, but it didn't really... grab me enough, I think, to play when they weren't around.

Guildwars definitely has.

The story had a kind of Generic Extruded Fantasy Product feel to it, and the world was rather small (to keep people dense enough to do the rifts, I imagine).

Don't get me wrong -- I didn't dislike the game -- but it wasn't exceptional enough to keep me from eventually deciding I'd played it enough.

I think Trion ended up making a good return on it. I think the whole thing cost them about $50 M to put together, and some of that was on infrastructure they're using (or will be using) for other games.

BTW, did you start it up on day 1, or did you come in later? The rifts/events in the lower zones had a very different feel when the zones were well populated.

It was pretty early on, I think.

The guild is pretty amazing. I instantly felt at home there; the people are simply wonderful, fun and considerate. I am completely in love with Guild Wars right now, though. My little engineer is fun as heck to play.

Grats on the new apartment and finding a therapist you seem to like. That last one is harder than people think. I'm so lucky that I clicked with my therapist instantly. I'm glad that seems to be the case with you.

I think once I get settled in and some of the dust settles in my life (moving, etc) I'll feel a little more grounded and less 'ohgod did I make a mistake? D:' about it.

I'm really psyched to be raiding again though, and I feel really good about the guild, so... I'm sure it'll pass. :) My primary RP partner brought a character over (Although she decided she didn't want to app to the guild), so that helps too. :)

I'm seriously loving that about GW2... the only time I have seen anything remotely lulzy has been Queensdale and even that was nothing compared to what I've seen on a lot of WoW server trade channels (much less LFG). It's amazing to see general conversational chatter going on and folks being nice if someone asks a question.

I'm loving my little engineer too. I just got the skill that turns all your abilities into flamethrowers, mwahahahaha.

edit: and I realize I misread "guild" as "game"... whoops. Things one does when in the middle of thwanging jaw pain. (Dentist can't figure out what's going on, I get antibiotics, hopefully they do something cuz this is ridiculous.) So I totally misread you on that being about the GW2 community, which, well, see above ( ... )

Our guild of 5+ years (and we've known people in that guild for longer) disintegrated about the time SW:TOR came out. We swapped to a guild we've had our eyes on for a while - it's a friendly, active guild that happens to raid... Which, with the introduction of LFR, has moved further down our priority list.

We like the group, but it's a guild that's been around for 7+ years, so we're still very much the new people in town. It'll take us time to get used to the folks there, and them to us.

Yeah, I think that's part of it. The other part is... Bren is die-hard Alliance, and so is C, my primary 'let's fart around in WoW' partner. She moved one of her characters over, and went to a different guild, but I am still having that 'new kid in town, don't know nobody :(' feeling.

It's always tough when people you've known for years disintegrate; our EQ2 guild that Bren was in EQ1 with (so he had known these folks going on 6 years) fell apart amidst... alot of drama (We got our own Encyclopedia Dramatica article).

I felt the same way, though my wait between posts was a bit longer (16-months) and my post was considerably shorter... But it's the thought that counts, right? :)

Hey, I know I'm late on this, but I just wanted to leave you a note to say hello. I've been missing you in WoW, and I know we've both been pretty busy. I'm taking classes now for my new job, and that's been a little overwhelming for me. But I've been wondering how you're doing.

I'd like to get together with you soon, if that's alright with you. Maybe you could introduce me to your GW2 guild, or I might see you soon in MoP. I hope to hear from you. :)
