This is so painfully random. I'm not an Ebayer. I have like 12 feedbacks to my ID, I would have had more if it weren't for the goddamned snipers. I truly have a sincere hatred dislike for these people. I was bidding on a Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin game that came with the Anniversary pack. This was a kickass thing that came out last November and ( Read more... )

I'm torn on eBay snipers...

As a buyer on eBay I hate snipers with a passion. They certainly do seem to be rude little punks, especially the ones who put in odd numbers just to throw off the system (bidding $21.07 so they can beat anyone bidding $21).

However, as a seller...I don't mind so much. Several of my recent auctions got "sniped" at the last minute and raised the sale by quite a bit. I'm sure it sucked for the folks who put in early bids, but it was difficult for me to feel sorry for them when I made an extra $50.

...yeah, I know. I think what just got me last night was that I hadn't bid on anything in forever, and the way his little "look at how awesome I am at being able to do this" stunt and the attitude that immediately came across just set up the mood for the evening. :)

I'll be emailing you today, btw. Hotmail's been acting screwy and I've been in the process/debate ...process of switching to another addy.

Yeah, the hard thing about eBay is that a lot of people don't want to pay too much for the item, for a variety of reasons, so they'll wait until the end to bid. One thing you can do to protect your bid is decide up front how much you *really* want the item and use the, uh, what's it called? The thing where it bids for you (I started using eBay like *seven years ago* but my feedback is something like a 12 also because I rarely use it!) up to your max bid. And then do the odd number thing yourself like if you're willing to pay $30 for a game, figure most other folks are also, and set your max at $30.50 or something. I almost never see an auction ending, becaues of work, sleep, etc, (and I'm not nuerotic like some people I know who will do eBay auctions with TWO MONITORS when they *really* want something!) so I just plan ahead ( ... )

I hate that - it happened to me too. Some people regard it as part of the game, but i think of it as dirty pool. In the real world, when someone makes a bid just before the gavel comes down, the bidding gets extended. Ebay could do this too, like any bid automatically means the auction remains open for say a half hour.
