Wikia Link for Okami Okamiden:
Issun's role in Okamiden is much smaller (ha) than his role in the original title. He names Chibiterasu and helps him to find a partner in the beginning, then goes off on his own to continue his work as Amaterasu's Celestial Envoy. He appears from time to time and is shown to be investigating the sudden onslaught of demons just as thoroughly as Chibi is. He often leaves signposts in his wake, offering advice, information, and sometimes even restorative items.
Aside from helping Chibi, Issun has a secondary goal in mind that we as players only catch glimpses of until near the very end of the game. He seeks a path to the Celestial Plain, and by the end of the game-- he finds it! After digging through some old ruins, he discovers the blueprints for what can only be described as a gothic, Tron-lined UFO and commissions it to be built. He wastes no time in using it to first and foremost complete his job as an Envoy, whizzing around Nippon and spreading his word and his art wherever he goes. Once that is taken care of he makes for the Celestial Plain, not only to visit Amaterasu, but to return her son to her as well.
[ Personality ] :
If there is one thing you will immediately notice about Issun, it's probably that he's pretty damn annoying. Ninety-nine percent of his first impressions are, well, really terrible, and with good reason! Snarky and crass with a penchant for giving others simple and often embarrassingly blunt nicknames, Issun can dish out insults and wise cracks as quick as he takes them, if not quicker. At the same time he doesn't take criticism lightly, and often angrily overreacts at even the slightest provocation. He's stubborn, rude and brutally honest, not to mention an obnoxious braggart. Sometimes brave and often reckless, it's no surprise that he's every bit as brash as his catchphrase, "leap before you look," makes him sound.
Despite his size, he is also Nippon's biggest pervert, and will waste no time in hitting on every pretty female face within a ten mile radius. He... doesn't really seem to get that girls don't appreciate this, as he's only ever been yelled at for climbing in a girl's clothes. They are apparently great places to nap!
Obvious personality flaws aside, Issun still manages to be a genuinely friendly person, if a bit full of himself. One of the upsides to his brutal honesty is that if he's impressed with you, he'll tell you about it! Sometimes even in excess! He's just as loud and proud of his friends as he is of himself, and that's not anything he's embarrassed to admit. He also obviously cares for the well-being and safety of others despite how much he tries to hide it, and shows a surprising lack of greediness for all his obsession over treasure ("Nothing good ever comes outta having too much money!"). His diligence in completing his job as Celestial Envoy is something to be admired, and his love of art is so integrated into his lifestyle that he can apply it seamlessly to almost any situation.
Issun's very loud outer self-confidence, while often not as unfounded as one would believe, does an excellent job of covering up how very insecure he is. He showers praise upon others for traits he wishes he had (or thinks he doesn't have) and is quick to hypocritically chastise those who display traits about himself that he hates (not to be confused for when he's actually just insulting someone). When met with a situation he thinks he can't handle he will immediately try to back out of it, and usually compels anyone he cares for to do the same. This has quelled some over his journey with Amaterasu; given someone to defend or an ideal to uphold, he can stubbornly push past his fears and produce a bravado that may seem jarringly out-of-character for those who are unused to it. He usually refers to this as "psyching himself up," and he'll repeat this phrase to Ammy whenever he's encouraging her before a tough fight.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Issun is a ~*treasure hunter*~, which by default means he's also a thief. He can pick locks, untangle the wiliest of restraints, and steal your greatest treasures right out from under your nose without breaking a sweat. He's also a fairly competent swordsman when given a level playing field (i.e. his opponent is the same size as he is). The main problem here is that he thinks he's much better at these things than he actually is, and he's got a hair-trigger temper that often gets him into trouble.
His incredibly small stature is something of a double-edged sword, with the advantages and disadvantages being about even. He's speedy and bouncier than a rubber ball; combined with his size this makes him very difficult to catch. However, this also means that he's severely lacking in the physical strength department, at least for fights (his species as a whole seems able to carry many objects multiple times their size without any problem). Issun is pretty much screwed if anything larger than he is actually manages to grab him.
Celestial Brush Techniques:
Like Amaterasu, Issun has the ability to use the Celestial Brush (and seems to imply that anybody can, so long as they practice diligently). We only ever see him use two of these techniques, so those are the ones I will stick to for now unless he decides that learning more of them may be beneficial to him while he's trapped in Vatheon.
1. Rejuvenation: Restores simple broken objects such as bridges, laundry poles, and statues. (Works as normal.)
2. Greensprout
-2.1. Bloom: Restores dead plants to life, creates new plants. (Requires the presence of fertile soil, can create small patches of flowers or one very tall flower at a time.)
-2.2. Water Lily: Creates lilies in water. (Lilies will be bug sized and not at all load bearing.)
-2.3. Vine: Draw vines from Konohana flowers and attach them to other things. (Unusable, these flowers don't exist in Vatheon.)
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Nope.
[ Sample ] :
Ugh, of all the times to get a surprise bath!
Issun sat up instantly, swiping his helmet off and dumping all the extra water out of it as he muttered none-too-quietly about the soggy state of his clothing, and how it was going to take forever to repair the water damage done to his brushes, and boy was he ever going to get an earful from Sakuya for slacking off on the job even though all he did was stop by Cat Cafe for one teensy weensy drink, and--
"Hey, wait a second..." he paused, finally having the sense to take in his surroundings and realize exactly where he was. "Am I underwater?"
Most of his previous experiences with being as such were highly unpleasant, he recalled, and he could do nothing to suppress the shudder that wracked him when the memories of said times returned to him. He willed the ghosts and horrors and the squelching noise of rotting organs away as his focus returned to the task at hand. What the heck was he doing in a place like this? Confusion quickly swapped back to anger when no answer immediately presented itself.
"Oooh, I have had it! Hey, kidnappers!" he called out, voice booming for one of such small stature, "I don't have time to play your stupid games with you! Don't any of ya realize just who I am? Celestial Envoys don't have time for dumb pranks!"
He bounced on the spot in a fit of rage, glowing a sharp red as steam poured from his ears. His tantrum resulted in little more than a headache, however, and he was forced to bring the clamour he was making down to a dull simmer so he could think about things properly. His light shifted back to its neutral green sparkle as he hopped along, searching in vain for any sort of clue as to where he was, but nothing looked familiar. He would even have accepted help from that insufferable half-baked prophet (no, he wouldn't) at this rate, but it was rapidly becoming clear that he would be on his own for awhile yet.
"Where'd I end up, anyway? Dragonia?" He immediately shook his head, noting the stark differences between the colorful, truly fantasy-esque Dragonian Palace and the almost... "human" architecture of this strange city. But, what other explanation could there be? There was nowhere else in Nippon where he could survive underwater so easily.
"Wow, this place sure has changed since Ammy and I were last here. Not a single Dragonian in sight, either! Where the heck is everyone?"
[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : Actually, I've been wondering! Issun is roughly the same size (or perhaps even smaller) than the "fairy companion" everyone in Vatheon is given. Does that mean Issun's fairy guide will be even smaller than usual to match his own height, or will it be the same size as him?
