Background:
herePersonality:
Mion is basically presented as a boisterous tomboy. She's stronger than she looks, is full of seemingly boundless energy, and lives to put her friends in embarrassing costumes for laughs. She's competitive to an absurd degree, in that she views card games as a life or death type of thing. Mion's incredibly sneaky and smart, knowing what exactly what to say and when to say it, and she can analyze things with an amount of insight not befitting a 17-year-old. Her sense of humor is ridiculously perverted and just plain old odd, to boot. Sticking her male best friend in a maid costume? Best time ever. She refers to herself not with a standard "I" pronoun, but "ojiisan"--meaning "old man." And her "winning strategies" are notably all corrupt, like playing with a deck she memorized or using verbal persuasion on the opponent.
If there's one thing that Mion is extra-passionate about, though, it's pride. Specifically, pride in both her town and her family. She took place in the anti-dam construction movement (that would have demolished Hinamizawa entirely), even getting violent and attacking. Although it comes with the territory--Mion is the next head of the Sonozaki family, one of Hinamizawa's three great families. She's faced with the duty of one day taking over the clan that single-handedly supplies the town with weaponry and defense. So it's natural that she's extremely prideful about being a Sonozaki. They're said to have been descended from Onis, when they crawled out of the Onigafuchi swamp and intermixed with the humans. Mion shows no shame in being "cursed with Oni blood."
Inside, though, her insecurities are greater than she's willing to admit. She's a girl, and she knows this, despite her choice of pronouns and attitude. And beneath her boyish front, she does like feminine things. In Watanagashi-hen, she got depressed when she realized Keiichi just thought of her as "one of the guys" and not a girl. In her position as the leader of her gaggle of friends, and the future head of the Sonozaki family, though, she rarely gets a chance to express these feelings. High standards were dumped on her from a young age, and she's not quite used to letting someone else take the reigns; she shows bewilderment and confusion when not leading.
But her relationship with her twin sister Shion is probably the strongest argument. Shion is the younger of the twins, and as such the twin less favored. Shion is actually Mion, though--the two performed an identity swap when they were younger, resulting in the younger twin being mistaken for the older one. The younger one was branded with the Sonozaki's Oni tattoo, forever naming her as the elder sister, Mion. Shion proceeded to grow up in her sister's shadow, never openly admitting that she was, in fact, 'Mion'. What flips, though, is that when Mion finds she needs someone to talk to, when she needs a shoulder to cry into, she goes to Shion. Shion isn't very mentally stable, however, so this often ends in Mion subconsciously feeling worse, and her problems only intensifying.
Mion is strong, though. Ridiculously strong. She's the emotional pillar for the group, along with Keiichi, and is the least affected by Hinamizawa syndrome, which makes nearly every member of the group go completely insane, paranoid, and murderous. Stated in a side story, Mion has killed out of jealousy in another timeline, but it's never shown in the series proper--and she wasn't affected visibly in it, either. She's hardworking (the $500 prize in a Game Club contest came out of her own pocket), and is as stubborn as an ox, even in the face of inevitable death.
Abilities: Mion has no supernatural abilities, though her latent "Oni blood" may be sensed by those able to.
