Typically, I think it's more to do with caring about what you're studying. And, more to the point, believing that the curriculum is set to best instruct you. -I never could, because I was a little to attuned to most academic standards having been made in knee-jerk sessions of the state legislature and having little to do with the best interest of the student. Having been surrounded in school by national merrit scholars and similarly insufferable types, who have all gone on to glowing academic and professional careers; all I can say is that academics is about the personal ability to overcome what you likely to figure to be so much bullshit. I couldn't, just clean drove me crazy. It's like four years of intellectual hazing; you can put up with it or you can't. Status and opportunity generally arrive via the former.
