Learning Chinese is like riding a tricycle!

Lately, I've been feeling smug about my Chinese comprehension, because I've been reading Harry Potter in Chinese. Apparently my current vocabulary of Chinese characters + ability to guess from context because I know Harry Potter inside and out = comprehension! It's slow going, but...I can read! Without a dictionary (90% of the time)! And I can ( Read more... )

this is amazing. i didn't know muggles are papayas in chinese. a long time ago i was at the library and came across CoS in chinese so i borrowed it (in vain) to get my parents to read it. lol

i can only shake my head at my chinese kindergarten books now. can't actually read them. *facepalm*

also lol once i came across a comment from someone who said they learnt all their english from the internet, and in particular, from reading fanfic when they were younger and her/his english teacher couldn't understand where she was getting all this random slang.

lol, yeah. There are some more puns in there; I should keep track of them but I remember a website somewhere where they kept track of the Chinese/Japanese/Vietnamese etc. translations of Harry Potter. The characters aren't the same for papaya, but it sounds *exactly* the same, so it's kind of amazing that muggles are papayas.

aww. I think I was stuck for three years on my kindergarten books...*facepalm*

lol. Sounds like fanfiction literacy acquisition plan is a go!

Aww. Deeply sorry to hear that; I thought UBC had some higher level courses in TC? Idk. I'm planning to learn SC first before tackling TC mostly for practical reasons, but it would be nice to get around to TC eventually. I think TC + SC at the same time wouldn't be too bad and actually kind of makes sense if you ever planned to learn both. (Must be faster than learning one after another) :? Guess I'll just be taking Chinese all by my lonesome then.
