I wish I had some magical words of advice for this, but I don't. I always wanted a gay best friend, though. Maybe get through the misunderstanding first, then admit the crush? Maybe have some conversation with him first and feel him out? Your life is quiet but so very interesting. ;)

Go ahead and express your interest to him. If he is gay, he won't be offended; he should be flattered! And if not, then it just shows he's a jerk and is no good for you anyway.
