Goodness, has this banner always been Romola and Bryce from As You Like It? If so, I apologize for not commenting before - I absolutely love that film! It's one of the few I've actually bought before I watched it, simply on the strength of director, cast, and composer. And Romola and Bryce were simply heartbreakingly good in it - silly, winsome, beautiful, and incredibly intelligent. Wow.
It has always been this banner on this journal, but it wasn't on the old fair_terentia one.
It was really a very enjoyable film. I won't say that I unreservedly loved it because I couldn't see why Brannagh decided to set it in Japan. I didn't think it added anything and made some things confusing. It felt like he was doing it for the sake of being "different" and that irritated me. Having said that, I thought Bryce was a lovely Rosalind and the way he interpreted the Shakespeare was spot on.
I have a very fond spot for As You Like It because I was named after the heroine whom I admire very greatly. :) Who wouldn't want to be so witty, warm and intelligent? It's my favourite Shakespeare.
I agree about setting it in Japan - though Scotland (I think that's where they actually filmed it) was very pretty! And I was surprised at Bryce's acting - she took a role that read to me a bit mannered and made it completely real. (sorry, not trying to insult Rosalind - I think that in the right hands, she's wonderful).
And I would love to be as warm, witty, and intelligent as Rosalind - but in truth, would rather be Celia (if I were a girl).
I did a search for classical philology in the interest section and your journal popped up. I like your icon & and journal name. Do you mind if I add you as a friend?
Sure! :) I don't tend to write much about those fandoms (I love them but not as an analyser fangirl if that makes sense) but I just read your big post on Spooks S09 and completely agree with it. I never gave it much thought as to what was so unsatisfactory about the ending, but you've hit the nail on the head.
