Yea so....Brentwood meet. Lost 17-10. Closer than I expected, I must say.  Everyone fenced decently. Sabre team did unexpectedly well. Foil was alright. Epee sucked. As number one and captain....I feel responsible for this. But...thats why I lost my bouts. The jump from JV to varsity is extreme. To jump from JV to number one and captain...was too ( Read more... )

hey its ok, that is alot of stuff to put on your shoulders. I do much better in individual too, i hate having all those ppl wathcing. The zoning out thing, it really does work, I do that alot now in my bouts and only watch the fencer and listen for the directior nothing else, i just zone out everyone, and it helps alot cause it dosne't feel like i have so many eyes on me, i hope that'll work for u too. And you'll do better these next bouts!

Being that im one of the few people that will comment on here and have been a team captain, mayhaps I may have some insights for you. Firstly, I totally hear you about it being kinda crazy with everyone watching there is no magic answer for this but to just tell you that you either learn to tune it out or don't personally I focused on only 2 voices in a bout, my coach and the director. Secondly, Coach Nelson is definitly an intimidating guy to have as a coach. About all I can say on that is the man knows where its at, try to see past his intensity and to take in what he is saying. Third, As captain you do have a responsibilty to help others improve, but it doesnt all have to be on your shoulders, the biggest skill you will learn from being captain is to delegate. Have others do things. Fourthly, as the captain you don't necessecarily have to win every bout, but you should lead with the attitude you take into bouts, that means no hissy fits, no complaining, and none of the statements like " i dont even know what happened in that ( ... )
