I felt the urge to watch Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame today. So I did ( Read more... )

I always liked Hunchback of Notre Dame myself, though I always wondered how on earth anybody could look at a novel like that and go "kids' movie material!" And I thought that Frollo was a really interesting villain as well- unlike a lot of Disney villains, you really got to see what made him tick. Also, that Hellfire song was awesome.

I know, why did anybody think it should be for kids? The movie deals with some surprisingly heavy stuff for Disney- rape, racism/genocide, religion and so on. But Frollo was a great villain. The others were just being "evil" for the sake of it, really, or they just wanted to take over a kingdom or something. Frollo was actually realistic.
And yes. Like FIRE, HELLFIRE!! :3 I listened to it last night before bed lols.

It's funny when I think of it- Frollo is probably the only Disney villain that still kind of creeps me out as an adult. He had me sold from the whole chasing Quasimodo's mother on horseback thing, and the weird thing was that in some ways I was almost sad that he died at the end because he was such a cool villian. I am weird like that though.

Plus there was the whole religious angle, which really made his character much richer, I think.

Man, why doesn't Disney make movies like that anymore?

I totally agree. He is just...eep. He's so creepy it's awesome. But at the same time he was a tragic character because no one ever really liked him...which is sad even though he was a bastard.
It reminds me of Christopher Carrion from Clive Barker's Abarat. Have you heard of him? He like does all these terrible things but he's so sad that you're like "Aww ;~;" The movie Downfall even managed to make Hitler sympathetic. It's so much better to have these well-rounded villains.
I wish Disney did something more worthy than like...Jonas Brothers and iCarly. It was so much better when they had all these edgy films complete with Frollo going "Or you will BUUUUUUUUUUUUURRRRRNNNNNN -FACEPLANT-" And come one, Lion King was the best. It makes adults cry still. xD Now there's not so much emotional content, I think. It's just vapid pre-teen crap. |:
