WOS: O.O

The following author's note is from a fic that has been recced to me.  Because of that rec I'll give the story a try, but I have to admit that I remember opening this story in the past and reading this note and giving up before I even got to the text of the fic, because this?  Is ridiculous.  Even with someone reccing the fic, I have a hard time ( Read more... )

I think the last straw for me was "I'M SUPER CEREAL ABOUT THIS". Gag.

Wow that's worse than normal. Truly, I wish authors would skip notes all together if they can't restrain themselves to leaving notes at the beginning or end of a fic. Some notes are complete turn offs and distracting to the story or provide spoilers.

Personally, I wish author's would leave any notes that are not immediately necessary for the reader. Yes for warnings and a summary and story status. Definitely no for informing the reader of the soulmate status of her main pairing.

Do you mind if I ask for clarification on your comment? I'm one of those authors who gets eye rolls for my long author notes (which I write a) for myself and b) for a tiny group of friends who enjoy reading about writing process and such), yet since day one I've never put them in the actual post. If I have them at all they're placed in the first comment on the fic where someone would have to make an effort to go find them and read them, thus relieving regular readers of the burden of scrolling past them and all.

I can live with the eye rolls, but I do like to hear what reasonable and intelligent people think about how author notes should be handled so your opinion means something to me.

BTW, a belated thank you is due. You recced one of my stories apparently a year ago and I didn't find out right away. But thank you! Since Miracles is my favorite TV show of all time I was pleased beyond belief to get that fic recognized publicly. I really did try to use SPN (a very popular crossover fandom for us Miracles fen) to give some ( ... )

If you keep your author's notes away from the top of the story (or even put them in a separate post/comment), then I think you should be allowed to make them as long as you'd like. It's not as if anyone is being forced to read your notes (as is the case when you put them at the top of a story and you have to, at the very least, skim through the notes to find where the story begins). This is especially true of LJ, which is a more informal platform anyway.

Personally, I actually like long author's notes at the end of a story. If it's a good story, then the notes can tell me more about the author or the writing process or about some of the research behind the story. If it's a bad story, then I never make it to the end and thus the (probably equally bad:) notes can't bother me. It's only when they're at the beginning or in between each chapter that they drive me nuts.

And thanks for the fic!

Oh, I remember that AN. I kinda rolled my eyes too, mostly because the author seemed so proud of herself. But I still read the fic because it was so very long and recced to me (and also, slow-building, which I like).
It was a while ago, but I -think- I liked it (though apparently it didn't mark me that much). I would remember if I'd hated it, anyway.

It's hard to forget, isn't it:) I'll probably read the story because it was recced to me personally and because I love really long, slow-building fics as well. Still, my hopes aren't high...
