Graduated this morning! Got hooded yesterday (i.e. doctoral degree is conferred by your advisor placing a hood over your head, it's a small and sweet ceremony) then commencement was today. Officially graduated, yay me

. . . and we have liftoff! epicycles is GO for graduation! Woohoo! \o/
. . . I didn't know about the "hooding" business. What's the meaning behind it? Assuming the mantle of knowledge, perhaps? ;) But would they not take the hood OFF of your head, as now you know stuff and can see clearly? Or something? Gotta tell you, I'm having Animal House-style visions about this ceremony that involve the phrase "Thank you sir, may I have another?" XD
usually she's asleep by the end of the opening scene.
LOL, that would have been my Mom, too. It was kind of a family joke that she'd be asleep fifteen minutes in. Then someone would poke her awake and she'd be all: "I'm awake! Good movie!" And then be snoozing again in five minutes. :D
. . . I guess I need to go see what all the "Avengers" fuss is, don't I? *loves me some RDJ/Tony Stark*
The hooding ceremony is a weird thing. I think academic regalia evolved from priest and clerical robes, and the hoods had some symbolism then. So now hoods are something that doctors have (at some universities, not all), so getting your hood has become symbolic? IDK. It's quite weird! The hoods are very nice though, velvet and silk and four feet long. I like mine. :)
Haha your mom is my mom. Turn on a tv and it's like she's been hit by a tranquilizer dart. :) I think the record for her staying awake was Lord of the Rings, she stayed awake for those. The record for sleeping was the RDJ/Jude Law Sherlock Holmes, she was asleep before the opening credits were over. XD
I HIGHLY recommend seeing Avengers! (As is obvious from my recent post history...) RDJ/Tony is like my favorite thing in the whole world and he is awesome in it. GO SEE GO SEE.
(Also I am now having RDJ/Tony ship thoughts. Tony would definitely be into the guy playing him in a movie....)
And yay on parental movie going. My mom leaves these types of movies to me and my dad... Can't wait to see it. I don't even know if it's out in Japan or not -- I do my best to ignore the movie theaters here because they're so bloody expensive (although I think one near my apartment does a weekly Ladies' Day, so I might be able to sneak in for only ¥1000).
My mom sleeps though everything so she no longer gets a vote on which movies we watch. :) Dad and I luckily have very similar taste. I hope you do get to see Avengers soon, if only because you will get hopelessly spoiled pretty soon, spoilers are everywhere!
