What are the Brits making about Aretha Franklin singing new words to God Save the Queen? The ABC here (Red Symonds) is playing with it a lot - all quite surprised really.

The song Aretha sings - if you get to hear it all, not just a snippet, is set to the tune of God save The Queen. No - I'm not kidding.

If you (and Lee, and Red Symons) had watched as much crappy American TV as some people *ahem* have, you'd have encountered this former American national anthem a long time ago.

The "new" words Aretha was singing were written in 1831.

Also, Land of Hope and Glory (Pomp and Circumstance) is the music most played at American school/college graduations (leading some to think that *it* is the American national anthem).

I'd laugh scornfully, but I'm from the country that thought La Marseillaise with new words would make a great footy club song.
