Thank you Ken. I regret that you never managed to meet him I think you would have appreciated his personality - a very friendly curmudgeon the last 3-4 years.
I need to remember that we helped keep him from suffering but looking back he has been struggling the last few months and slowing down a lot more.
I broke down in a store yesterday when I saw one of those pet stairs. It was only Sunday when I told him he isn't old enough to need stairs yet and then picked him up and put him on the bed. Usually he would jump on his own - didn't matter when. I mean it REALLY didn't matter to him when he jumped on the bed.
Thank you. It does help to keep perspective when I need to hold things together that many people have experienced having to say goodbye to a loved companion.
If I ever manage to meet you in person I will expect to share a hug :)
My sympathies for your loss. As someone who has owned pets for most of his 51 years, I can tell you that it never gets any easier when we lose one, regardless of whether its to disease, old age, cars, or wandering away.
Yes there will be more loss in the next decade. Frannie is 11 and very high strung and already showing a bit of change in kidney function. Martin is only 6 (I think he is 6, sigh my memory is flakey) but is a big kitty (3 feet from nose to tip of tail and 21.5 pounds) and may not be quite as robust. It will be very sad when they go too. Ian's spirit and antics influenced so many things he left a large void.

If you feel like someone is grooming your beard and nuzzling his face into it - that would be Ian greeting you and saying thanks.
