My comics are too nerdy

If you have to consult "Explain xkcd" to get why P. was laughing like a drain . . . .

The salad bar at T&C has reopened after two years!!! Lunch was tasty, good for us and the new containers are compostable. It is good to see local places thinking ahead. As P. had work to do, we drove down rather than walking, but that meant I could bring along ( Read more... )

I am so glad that the EU is getting away from plastics...though there is still a long way to go before a lot of food processors get the memo. So much is still packaged in plastic! But it is slowly changing.

Your poor neighbours. Let's just say that I empathize deeply with anybody who falls and injures themselves!

I had a package arrive last week that I should have taken a photo of - it was a small box of lip care stuff and it arrived in a cardboard box several times its size, with all sorts of brown paper padding. Three-quarters of what arrived went straight into recycling. It's so frustrating!

Neighbour R. updated on Sunday and it was quite serious: D. fell in the shower and broke his leg, then at the hospital his heart stopped for a few seconds. He wound up with a pacemaker as well as plates and screws to reassemble his leg. She also wrote that his vision is so poor that he can no longer read, so asked that any mail be addressed to her. While I don't know what their home in Sequim is like, I do wonder if they will be able to remain in it if his health doesn't recover.

We have plans to ban single use plastics on the island as far as possible - I assume it means we will still have recyclables for some things. I really like the thin wooden cutlery most of our snack bars and take aways use now.

I love the circuit diagram - especially 'not a resistor, wire just does this' :)

And yes, if it was me I would appreciate a note, too. Which reminds me of someone I need to send one to!

The rules that went into effect here on the 1st are that you have to specifically ask for single-use food service plastics; the city's taking a year to get everyone switched over to "no disposible food service ware and all take-out stuff has to be home compostable; $0.25 charge on disposible cups (so that people bring refillable ones)". You will understand that it's not only a climate action issue but a marine plastics concern as well.

Keyboard wackiness meant this was truncated: I'm very fond of the jar of "magic smoke", myself. :D

As I said above to Donna, now that R. has updated all of us on how serious matters were, I am wondering if they are having a rethink on staying in their current home: it's on a road well away from town - I now know someone who's actually had to use their Airlift Northwest subscription, as he was flown to Harborview in Seattle - and I don't know how well it's suited to someone with mobility/visual limitations.

If it were me, I would appreciate a note.

Good for you. I also like to let people know that they're being thought about.

It takes two minutes and a stamp, and then someone has something in the mailbox that isn't a bill and lets them know that other people recognize they're going through a hard thing. More notes!
