"Is that the Irish part of Israel?"

. . . which was the mental question that tossed me right out of a LOTR fic at the beginning of the second chapter, when the viewpoint character mentioned the "Right of Return" with regard to a dual US/Irish citizen moving to Ireland (citizen by descent? I'm guessing? The author kinda glided over that point, along with most of the other things ( Read more... )

Re the fic; and don't tell me, let me guess... she follows a small man in green, thinking he is a leprechaun, and finds herself tumbling down a hole, coming out in The Shire...

I actually think the idea behind it has potential - modern outsider winds up the caretaker of the surviving bits of Eryn Lasgalen, and some of the original residents are still hanging around - but ohhhhhhhhhhh it's so bad.

Oh - that reminded me that I haven't read Jael's Not Fade Away series for a while... I hasten to add not because it is bad - it is very, very good!

This is sort of like a visit! When we first moved to the island we lived in Rolling Bay, and were frequent visitors to the little cluster of buildings at that intersection: the post office is in there, and the municipal court is next door; auto repair across the road, one of the performing arts spaces next to that, and an unbelievable family-owned Northern Italian restaurant on the last corner. There were plans to build a small run of mixed-use housing with a full market on the ground floor nearby, but I think the pandemic saw that project off.

I love it when I go in a shop and there's any kind of Animal Salesperson on staff. :)

Up in Anacortes, the marine hardware shop's job descriptions include a note saying that the shop cat is the boss of everyone: unless whatever's in the box they're napping on is needed to save a life, let 'em nap and go do something else.

In-shop animals are the BEST. They only have them in animal supply stores here...they're the only places you can take your dog or cat to work.

I hope Dear Friend H. has smooth travels...

Chase is not open to scritchies, but she will allow a dignified greeting provided you're not standing in her sunshine.

I hope they don't get there and find themselves persuaded to stay - their lease is up the end of April and her parents would be so happy if they were at least in the same time zone . . . .
