This question came up when Goddaughter K. asked for fantasy chapter books to read to Z. Z is 6. People were recommending The Dragonriders of Pern (what?!? The consent issues are baked in; the homophobia's a gift with purchase) and Rowling (hell to the no) and someone threw in Earthsea, and as beloved as Grandmother Ursula is and always will be to

We were too lazy to get up to see the eclipse which started at about 4:30 AM here. Sad but true.

Um, who on earth was suggesting those?? People who've never met a six year old? Unless she's really, really emotionally mature (which I'd doubt), none of those are appropriate for even a precociously young reader

I do still love the Pern books, despite all their faults - but for a six year old? WTF. Had the person who recommended them actually read them? Perhaps they misread 6 as 16... or perhaps they were just very, very, wrong.

We read Equal Rites to D-d when she was 5 or 6 - and the Truckers trilogy. We did the serialisation of books at bedtime thing until she was maybe 8 or so - we enjoyed it as much as she did! We would have done the Tiffany ones too if they had been written then. Otherwise, at that age, she was still into The Worst Witch - definitely not Pern!
