rant of the week: I despise intellectual snobs

Jun 09, 2011 14:30

The other day someone said that they didn't watch (...) because this show wasn't intellectual enough, and that for entertainment they only watched intellectual films or television shows. Naturally this embarrassed my friend, who had brought up the series in question. So I smiled (with all my teeth, ha ha), and said that deep intellectual work is my ( Read more... )

Yesterday I had a discussion with a friend of mine about the fact that there are people that thinks that there are way of expressions nobler than others. (book is good - tv is bad).I think that every way you use to produce something the product can be good or not, but sometimes is perfect. So is better to understand that a masterpiece can be everything that is made ... in Italy we say: following the rule of the art (art meaning: the proper way to do the job). So is better to read a really good manga (yaoi included of course) than an awful book!

Oh yes, I agree with you completely. It's better to read or watch something with heart in it, than to suffer through an awful book (or film, etc.). I often think that when someone is judgmental about a book or tv show or a film, and criticize it for not being 'intellectual enough', (as you say, 'book is good, tv is bad'), they are insecure about their own intelligence.

And of course, a really good manga (or tv show, or film) will offer loads of food for thought.

The fact is that we are in the entertainment era. Most people just want to «not to think» while others - as you say - are complacent and judgmental so they can show off what they know assuming a role in the society. It is not only the uncertainty about their intelligence but I noticed that lots of people don't know who they are becouse they don't border discovering. Of course it's easier to fit the role others gives to you.
That's why when I give a book, a dvd a cd or any «thinking material»I usually put a note on the present: If you find something interesting in it than you find something about yourself.

... Negli angoli di casa cerchi il mondo, nei libri e nei poeti cerchi te ... Francesco Guccini (italian song writer)

... In you home corner you look for the world, in the books and in the poets you look for yourself.

I apologize for responding so late. (got caught up with my research). I really enjoyed the quote you mentioned - what a person finds interesting in a book or film (or any 'thinking material' as you put it)tells a great deal about them.

Yes, most people don't want to think too much about things. (and others, as you say, wanna show off). It is easier to fit the role society gives to you than to find one for yourself. (but then, some would argue that it is very, very difficult to find a role other than what society gives you.) Some even argue that to a certain extent, we get our self-identity from the expectations that society has of us.

anyway, I just wanted to thank you for your insightful comments, and to apologize for not responding earlier. Now I'm off to find more about myself!

:laugh while reading this entry:
I usually a very cool-headed woman, I hate confrontation and I prefer to just shrug off bad comment or even insult going my way. But the only things I can't tolerate is an insult to my precious people. Yeah, I think we tends to be an overprotective towards our friend, especially since I'm such a weird person IRL, and making friends is such a hard thing to do, I treasure all the friends that I could have.

Reading your post are making me a bit sappy, I think I'll go and call my friend right now ^^

haha, I am usually cool-headed as well, but when this happened it made me really angry. I wrote this journal entry when I was still angry, because one thing I won't stand for is for someone to insult a friend.

You are correct - we should treasure the friends we have!
