Taiwan was roused from her concentration in front of the television by an insistent pounding noise. She turned down the volume on the news program, scowling slightly, and rose to press her eye to the peephole.
America stood in her doorway with a suitcase and a megawatt smile. Taiwan unchained and opened the door, head tilted.
"What brings you here?"
"Oh, nothing official," he said, smile barely flickering. "What, no 'hello'?"
"Hello, then, if that's what you want," Taiwan amended. "I know it's nothing official, but unless you're here to give me a kind letdown, Yao is not going to be happy with you."
"Wha--" America's eyebrows quirked together. "Oh. This isn't about the arms deal, if that's what you mean."
It was difficult to tell her sigh was disappointment or relief. "Then what?"
"Dammit, May, didn't I say I was here unofficially?"
"Aren't you always?"
"Hey." America held out his hands in conciliation, and would have taken hers if she'd let him. "I'm here on vacation from politics. That includes anything between you and me and your brother. It makes my head hurt and I don't like it any better than you do, all right? I'm just a tourist right now. Wanted to see you, maybe ask you to show me around your place, you know? Don't bite my head off."
She raised an eyebrow (she'd gotten very good at it these days) and held the door open wider. "Come in then, I guess. What do you want to see?"
Notes:
1: My headcanon-name for Taiwan, when I bother using it, is Lee Hwei-mei. Nonstandard romanization because the ROC officially used just about every system under the sun before officially designating standard Pinyin; two-character name because that's more common in Taiwan as opposed to one-character Mainland names. Lee she adopted herself after her favorite president, in place of her brother's surname; Hwei being a common character in women's names meaning bright; mei for her national flower.
2: America likes English. Hence, Anglicization to "May".
3: Yes, usage of human names is necessary, or will be if I ever finish this. This is how they address one of their own kind when not acting as the State.
4: I will never ever get to the actual night market because that will require Actions. Oh gods. Actions.
