Sawyer's Son

October 3, 2005
If Sawyer had a son, he would protect him. Keep him safe. But Sawyer doesn't have a son. If he gets his way, he never will.
The son Sawyer doesn't have would have a mama and daddy who loved him. Kept him safe. Tucked him in at night and read him stories and never, never fought.
Sawyer names him James because he can't think of anything else. James goes to school, every day. He's so smart. Loves to read, and plays on all the sports team. He makes friends.
He grows up straight and tall and strong. Goes to college. Doesn't sell cars. Never learns to bilk pretty ladies out of their money. He's a doctor, maybe.
He marries a nice girl who loves him. She'd never cheat on him, never go for the cheap thrill of some grifter. Someday they have a kid of their own. Maybe a little girl, a sweet one with a pretty smile, who's never even heard the name Sawyer. And they all live happily ever after together.
Course…he could already have a son. He's been a lot of places, spilled a lot of seed, and he's not in the habit of leaving a forwarding address. Some poor little kid whose daddy thinks about a hundred thousand bucks every time he looks into the kid's blue eyes. A kid whose mama is just guilty and if he's lucky he'll never know why. Sawyer doesn't want to think about a kid like that out there somewhere. A kid he's already failed a hundred times worse than Michael ever failed Walt.
No, Sawyer will never have a son. Not when he's floating on a broken piece of raft with a bullet in his shoulder and sharks circling around, fifteen miles off the coast of a deserted island and nobody even looking for them. Even if he wanted to, Sawyer ain't never gonna have a kid. He won't even live to see the sun rise, way he's going.
End.
