Huh. I'm surprised by your complaints about the ending, as I never expected it to end any other way. It was clear that was the endgame from the very beginning. Aang's entire mission was to defeat the Fire Lord and bring balance and peace to the world. And he did. I'm sure it wasn't smooth, but it helps that Zuko becomes Fire Lord, and he's grown more than any other character in the series. Really, it's Aang and Zuko who bring balance and peace to the world.
As for Aang and Katara, that was there the whole time, so eh. I wish the final image had been something other than their kiss, but whatever. My complaints with the finale were mostly lion-turtle/energybending-related.
Have you seen the trailer for Legend of Korra? IT'S GOING TO BE AWESOME.

Well, yes. But it felt so rushed at the end of the third season that things felt unresolved. All the racism and hurt and oppression, all those Fire Nation soldiers who were willing to slaughter civilians . . . all of it handwaved away. The ultimate outcome obviously was going to be peace, but I wanted more time to get there.

That's what marphod said, but it's not what I saw

I didn't like the kiss as final ending, though I didn't mind them ending up together as part of the ending, because they're teenagers. Who just saved the world. If they didn't feel like they should smooch someone, I'd be kind of surprised. I don't think the relationship has good odds of lasting, but I didn't mind it in context. (I also doubt the peace will be That Simple, but I think it, too, could have a honeymoon period, and the after-happily-ever-after part is what fic is for.)

I still say the last scene had to be 5 or more years into the future. Even if that means I have to stick my fingers in my ears and go Lalalalalalallala.
The fire lord taking a vacation to the Earth Kingdom capital, and not as part of a state visit or with an official retinue? Heck, his hair was a completely different style from the topknot he was sporting at his coronation. Aang seemed more mature, as well. So, after 5 years of crush, Katara realized she liked him too.
