Hair mats

Can't remember if I've asked this before:

Other than the commercial detanglers, what would you recommend for helping to get horrible fused hair mats out of hair? No, cutting it out is not really an option. Is there an oil that would work better?

The best thing that I have ever, ever found for this problem is using Aussie Slip Detangling Conditioner (waaaaay better than No More Tangles or any detangling kids' shampoo+conditioner in one that I've tried) and then slowly and patiently using a wide-toothed plastic comb in the shower or tub.

I've tried oils before and found that they made things more sticky than slippery. Which was a whole new kind of bad rather than any improvement.

I would second the "no oil" idea. The only thing I could think of is maybe some silicon-based lube...? That stuff is nicely slippery and doesn't get sticky. Millenium ID is the kind Michael uses (I'm sort of self-lubricating!) and he loves it ( ... )

When I had long hair, I used Biolage Detangling Solution. It always worked great for me. It is best combed out wet.

We use Biosilk (or a knockoff) on Mason's curly locks.

The knockoff's on sale at Sally's right now, I think, for less than $6 per bottle.

I also found this , but have no idea if it works or how well.

I've also heard that mayo works wonders, but you have to rinse very thoroughly or you'll smell weird. heheh

Lots of patience on the part of someone with good manual dexterity?

(I don't see how in hell I could come to CS anytime soon, or I'd offer.)
